Pictures for Ukraine

We will be selling  a selection of framed images between now and Christmas. They will be on display at all Sky Business Centres. All proceeds will go directly to a charity based in Western Ukraine helping children who have suffered physical and psychological trauma as a direct result of Russian aggression. 

The photography is by Pat Walsh, Ceo of Sky Business Centres. Pat is a keen photographer and an active member of Dublin Camera Club. The images will be printed in Limerick and framed with love by hand using real wood and glass frame sets supplied by Acorn Framing in Dublin.

Some of the images have received awards this year and many have been received well locally and throughout Ireland.

Best headphones for working from home or virtual office

Cut the noise, keep the sound

When you’re working from home or in a virtual office, it’s not always possible to use your computer’s speakers and microphone for calls. A busy home can make for a noisy workplace, so a headset is often the way to go when working remotely. Traditionally, although headsets provide privacy, they have often been lacking in terms of audio quality and if you wanted to do anything else, watch a training video or listen to music whilst you work from home, for example, they weren’t really suitable.

There was also a situation where the lag from wireless headsets meant that, for video calling at least, you had to go wired. That has changed though, people now want hi-fi quality audio from their computers and smartphones and the device makers have stepped up to the mark with headsets that, through the latest Bluetooth codecs, provide top audio and low lag (or latency).

In this blog we’ll take a look at four such headsets – two high end and two at the more affordable end of the market. We have not taken a look at device dependent headsets like the Apple Airpods Max – the devices reviewed should work on any platform

 

Sony WH-1000XM4

Sony WH-1000XM4 for on the go
Until the upgraded XM5s reach these shores, the XM4s from Sony are the top of the range in both quality, features and price. Audio quality is extraordinary and can be easily manipulated, voice quality is acceptable, noise cancelling is best in class, they are comfortable to wear and feature a number of tricks that really do add value. You can set them up through their app so that if they detect someone speaking to you or you start speaking, they cut the music and turn off the noise cancelling. Very handy when working from home! They charge using USB-C and offer over 30 hours of battery life (claiming 38 hours with noise cancellation turned off).

They also offer multipoint Bluetooth connection. – you can connect to two devices at once, say your phone and your desktop, an incredibly useful feature. These features doesn’t come cheap though and at between €350 and €390 (depending on special offers) they are at the high end of the market. They also don’t offer any water resistance, so don’t use them in the rain or for a heavy session at the gym. I personally use these headphones when I’m working from home in Dublin and I can personally recommend them

Bose QuietComfort 45

Bose QuietComfort 45 for your virtual office
Bose pioneered noise cancellation in consumer headphones, and their venerable QuietComfort line has been around since 2000 – a lifetime in consumer electronics. The latest iteration offers noise cancellation (of course), ambient sound awareness – useful when working from home or in a virtual office, app control and are the most comfortable headphones on the market (at least this writer thinks so!). Sound quality is very good, though the sound quality of Bose headphones has been criticised, not for the actual quality, but rather for the way Bose shapes its soundstage. If you like the ‘Bose sound’ you’ll love these, if not – they aren’t as configurable sound-wise as others.

They offer USB-C charging, and although their battery life at 25 hours is less than the WMX4s, they have a quick charge feature that gives 3 hours of use from 15 minutes of charging. They can be controlled by their app (though there have been concerns in the past about Bose and privacy) They are also quite pricey though, generally available around the €350 mark.

Anker Soundcore Life Q35

Use Anker Soundcore Life Q35 when working from home or a virtual office in dublin
Anker are a Chinese brand known for their computer accessories, particularly hubs and powerbanks and have garnered a reputation for quality at a reasonable price. Their audio division is branded Soundcore and it is from them that these headphones emerge. They offer noise cancelling, app control, a long battery life, USB-C charging and multipoint connection. Audio quality is good, but for the best return, use the app to shape the sound to your tastes as they are quite bass heavy out of the box. Noise cancellation is not quite as good as their rivals from Bose or Sony, but considering these are less than half their price, the quality certainly isn’t half as good, its far better than that.

They also offer a number of Noise Cancellation levels and modes, including the very useful Transparency mode – which is kind of the opposite of noise cancellation, they actually pipe outside noise into the headphones overlaying whatever you are listening to so you can be aware of your surroundings – useful on Dublin city streets or when working in a virtual office or working from from home and you need to keep an ear out for what’s happening. This writer keeps a pair of their predecessors the Q30s in his laptop bag for everyday use while commuting and they are, all things considered, his favourite headphones. The Q35s are available at the €150 price point – and the Q30s can be had for as little as €90, quite a bargain considering the only difference is that the newer models offer Sony’s proprietary LDAC hi-fi audio codec.

Plantronics BACKBEAT GO 810

Plantronics BACKBEAT GO 810 for remote working
Plantronics are one of the market leaders in phone headsets and their products in the headphone space are highly regarded though under marketed. The Backbeat Go headphones offer reasonable noise cancelling and good audio quality. Battery life is good at 22 hours and they quick charge to 3 hours of use time in 10 – however they are charged via the by now outdated USB micro cable. They support multipoint connection and provide a rock solid Bluetooth link. The are available from as little as €53 – and at that price they provide truly excellent value and are a great way to start your setup for working from home.

It should also be noted that all the headphones reviewed can be connected via cable to your device.

The last couple of years have been life-changing in so many ways. The old ways of working and living have changed beyond recognition and the old office job is now a kitchen job, or a living room job. We have been taken out of the traditional workplace, but we have also been taken out of our traditional interpersonal groups – at work and at home. The core elements of our wellbeing are gone. So how do we as human beings, social animals that we are, keep healthy not just in body, but in mind, in this new remote working reality?

 

Working at work vs. working from home

Working at work gave us a routine, at the desk at nine – finished at five, lunch with colleagues and friends in the middle of the day. That routine is gone now we’re working from home. The lack of structure can make people feel ungrounded. Therefore when working from home it’s important to put some kind of structure on your day. It doesn’t have to be the old nine to five, but it has to be something that you can lean into, you know that at certain hours you will be doing certain things. That certainty will help keep you grounded through the day and stop the hours just drifting away.

 

Stay active, stay connected

It’s important too to stay active. When you don’t have to go somewhere or be somewhere it is quite easy to become sedentary. We go from our bed to our desks (often in the same room) to our couches. We aren’t walking to or from the bus or train, we aren’t stopping in at the gym on the way home the way we used to. So it’s important for our wellbeing to make activities part of our every day. Get up from the desk every half hour and have a stretch, try to go for a walk at lunchtime or after work is finished. Even something as small as this can help keep the body and the mind active.

Staying connected is really vital. We don’t have the old networks surrounding us the way we used to, a chat over coffee in the office kitchen, a sandwich with colleagues at lunchtime, or perhaps a drink after work at the end of the week to connect with friends. These too have been disrupted and it is important to re-establish these relationships. Human contact is vital to our wellbeing. Make the effort to meet up – either in person or over zoom – stay involved with your friends and family. Working from home doesn’t mean working alone. And if you are in trouble, reach out, there is always someone willing to help – humans are great that way.

Put down the pizza delivery menu, shut down the Deliveroo tab. Cook. We’re working from home so we’re working either beside or in our own kitchens. Apart from the fact that cooking fresh food is healthier for us, it’s also better for our brains as well as our bodies. Share recipes – successes and failures – with friends and colleagues. It’ll help with you staying connected to each other. Sourdough bread is over though – move on!

Last but not least, don’t be a stranger. Keep in touch with other people, professionally and personally. Working remotely doesn’t have to mean that you become remote. The great English Poet John Donne summed it up best when he said

“No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as any manner of thy friends or of thine own were; any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind. And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.”

Ideally, you want your light source to be in front of you – you certainly don’t want it to be behind you otherwise all the people on your call will see is a silhouette of you.  When you’re working from home or working remotely though, it’s not always possible to control where your light source is.  If that’s the case, then invest in a simple ring light.  It’ll make the world of difference to how you look on screen.

Another problem with built-in webcams is that they are, well, built into your laptop.  That means that your callers’ view will be from a low angle.  The underside of your chin or up your nose is probably not your best angle!  Your camera should be at or slightly above your eye-line for the best picture.  Make sure you fill the frame also, your face should be centred in the frame and taking up at least one-third of it.

 

Background

If you have a dedicated office space when you’re working remotely you can ‘dress’ your background to make sure you present a professional view.  Keep it bland – you want people to focus on you on your call, not your beloved collection of tchotchkes.  Most Videoconferencing software allows you to impose a background of your choosing or to blur out your background (the latter is preferable) which is great for maintaining a bit of privacy when you’re working from home, but be careful – there are minimum hardware requirements for this and if you’re using a basic computer or laptop you may not be able to do this.

 

The Mute Button

Zoom meetings with remote working

Use it!  There is nothing worse than being on a call and hearing someone having a conversation with their partner/kids/pets when you’re trying to get a point across!  Personally, I like to remain on mute until it’s time for me to speak.  A great tip here is that in Zoom you can press the spacebar like a walkie-talkie button to temporarily unmute yourself if you need to make a quick interjection.  It is similar in Teams, where Ctrl+Space (or Opt+Space on Mac) will unmute you until you release the keys.

Just because you aren’t in the traditional office environment doesn’t mean that you don’t want to look and portray yourself professionally.  Hopefully, there is something in these tips that helps you when you’re working from home or working remotely.

The Blanchardstown meeting room has been transformed into a contemporary multi-use space with seating for up to eight people.

Stylishly decorated and fitted to the highest standards, our new meeting room is equipped with the latest technology, including screen sharing and wireless projections. We have also installed audiovisual equipment as part of this upgrade, including a new 200-inch screen wireless projector for corporate presentations, breakfast meetings, training courses, or workshops.

We have equipped our meeting room with ergonomic chairs to help reduce the risk of back pain. The backrest of these chairs supports the natural curve of your spine. In addition to supporting posture, ergonomic chairs relieve back and neck pain, reduce hip pressure, improve blood circulation and stimulate productivity.

 

Greener Environment

As part of the ‘Green for Micro’ programme and in conjunction with Dublin City LEO and Climate Action, Sky Business Centres is committed to supporting a greener environment.

We have implemented LED overhead lighting as part of this process in our Blanchardstown branch and are rolling this out across our other two centres during the first and second quarters of 2022. Compared to traditional Halogen bulbs, the new LEDs produce less waste thermal radiation, which is less harmful to your skin and eyes than conventional Halogen bulbs.

As cyber-attacks increase, cybercriminals are more inventive and opportunistic than ever before. As a result, Sky Business Centres has successfully upgraded its Zyxel firewalls to mitigate against potential cyber-attacks in our three business centres, Blanchardstown, Clonshaugh and Clontarf.

We are protecting our business and our clients from damaging cyber-attacks that can cause catastrophic harm, including financial liability, psychological injury, reputational damage, social and societal harm, as well as physical and digital harm.

Every week, the news is full of new ransomware attacks. It has devastating effects: massive ransomware demands, downtime and business disruption, reputation damage, data loss, and in many cases, attackers auction off sensitive company data.

 

Cost of cybercrime to the Irish economy

Cybercrime cost the Irish economy €9.6 billion last year, according to a new study by Grant Thornton. In total, ransomware attacks cost €2 billion alone, as well as the costs associated with fixing them. In addition, €1.3 billion was spent on computer viruses and €1 billion was spent on phishing.

Ireland experienced a 50% increase in online crime in 2020. In addition, recent high profile ransomware attacks against the HSE reported a ransom demand of €20 million to restore its services. This attack resulted in replacing over 30,000 devices worth about €30m.

The HSE further investment in replacing and upgrading the affected systems and other expenses would bring the total cost to an estimated €530 million.

The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly increased the number of people working from home, which has led to an increase in cyber-attacks against organisations.

In the wake of recent high-profile cyber-attacks within the U.S. against Colonial Pipeline Co, JBS and European Axa, the battle to combat ransomware has intensified globally.

Today’s digital age makes no company immune to cybercriminals. As a result, European leaders announced measures to counter ransomware attacks at the recent G-7 and NATO summits.

The new Article 5 stipulates that cyber attacks against one member nation are also attacks against all member nations. Therefore, every business must remain vigilant and protect itself from cyber attacks by monitoring and upgrading systems to be cyber secure.

Sky Business Centres has taken measures to safeguard our three business networks from potential cyber threats.  However, as a result we are not responsible for our clients’ business networks when using mobile, laptops, and desktop PCs.

Therefore, clients are responsible for the security of their networks; they should have their own Incident Response Plan, Configuration Management Plan, and Disaster Recovery Plan in the event of a cyber incident.
